Fish Species

Comments

  • Channel catfish are the most sought after species along the river. Any type of structure or deep hole will attract channel catfish, and anglers are often rewarded with a nice stringer of fish. Crayfish, cutbaits, night crawlers, or commercially prepared baits should be effective. Channel catfish are caught throughout the year all along the river. This predator lurks in deep holes along the river. Holes that have logjams or other types of woody debris can hold fish larger than 50 pounds. Anglers fishing for flatheads need stout tackle and live bait such as goldfish, carp, green sunfish and bullheads. Spring and fall are usually the best times to catch large flathead catfish. The lower Grand (below Sumner) is usually considered trophy water. No fish gathers more attention along the river than a large blue catfish. Cut baits fished in deep holes provide the opportunity to catch a truly large fish. These fish, also known as "white cats" can grow to over 70 pounds. Beginning in June 2000, the Missouri Department of Conservation will begin a program to increase walleye fishing opportunities in Grand River. Walleye fingerlings will be stocked at locations yet to be determined. In approximately three years anglers should be catching 15-inch fish. Some fishing opportunities exist for paddlefish in the vicinity of Brunswick Access. Numerous small paddlefish move in and out of the lower Grand. Snaggers should be prepared to catch several sub-legal fish before catching a "keeper".

Grand River Description

The Grand River is a river that stretches from northernmost tributary origins between Creston and Winterset in Iowa approximately 226 miles to its mouth on the Missouri River near Brunswick, Missouri. The West and East Forks of the Grand rise just south of Creston in Union County, Iowa. The Middle Fork rises at Mount Ayr, Iowa in Ringgold County, Iowa. The three forks merge just south of Albany, Missouri in Gentry County, Missouri and that is where the river officially assumes the single Grand River name. The Grand River Basin has more than 1,000 third order or higher streams. Prairie streams like the Grand River offer uncrowded, close-to-home floating opportunities. In the spring, water conditions are best for floating the Upper Grand and numerous sandbars provide excellent picnic and camp sites. The lower Grand can be floated year round. There are 14 public access sites along the mainstem of Grand River. Paying attention to river levels can mean the difference between an enjoyable float and a day spent dragging through long stretches of shallow water. Its watershed of 7,900 square miles (20,000 km²) with three-fourths in Missouri, makes it the largest watershed serving the Missouri River in northern Missouri.
